Optimized part-load fuel consumption
In real life, engines usually operate over a wide range of power below the full-load output. So improvement in part-load fuel consumption is particularly important for real fuel economy under actual service conditions. In the ASL25 part-load performance is improved by appropriate adaptation of turbocharging system:
Charge air bypass. The best match of the modern high-efficiency turbocharger to the ASL25 is facilitated, in the particular case of variable-speed versions, by incorporating a charge air bypass device which is opened below about 75-80% power.
Charge air waste gate. Progressively opened above 90% power, the optional waste-gate valve allows higher boost pressures to be used at part-load for up to 1.5 g/bhph (2 g/kWh) further improvement of part-load BSFC on heavy fuel oil while avoiding excessive cylinder pressures at higher loads. Minimum BSFC can thus be obtained in the actual service load range while retaining the capability of running up to full engine MCR output when necessary.
The waste gate is also useful for special applications which require the engine to accept particularly sudden load changes, or if it needs to give a very fast acceleration.
